ballarat winter festival top picks

Cascading snowflakes to hearty fare, mesmerising illuminations to darling penguins, fairytale stories to fiery jousts: here are Mamma’s top picks for a family winter vacay well-spent in Ballarat!

1. Escape to a winter wonderland
As you well know, Sovereign Hill will once again host its beautiful Winter Wonderlights display during winter. During the day, take a stroll down the Main Street as snow-flakes fall at regular intervals over the Victorian style buildings. Relish in the smell of Christmas treats and spices filling the air and listen as the traditional carols ring out across the buildings. By night, witness the Victorian buildings light up in spectacular style through the magic of grand scale projections and watch the kids be mesmerised by a world of sound, light and delight!

2. Glide like royalty on ice
Visit the pop-up ice-skating rink where the family can slide on its skates and glide like a prince or princess on ice. The rink is located right in the heart of our CBD and sessions last about an hour.

3. Get close and personal with Australian fauna
Head to the Ballarat Wildlife Park and get up-close-and-personal with some cuddly koalas, cute kangaroos and (not-so-cute) crocs.  Admire the darling little penguins, meet the newly-welcomed meerkats and see the beautiful Alpine dingoes.

4. Indulge in some hearty fare
Plenty of Ballarat’s cafes and restaurants will have special warming deals during the Winter Festival period. The Ballarat Potato Festival will also be held on June 30, celebrating the spud in a variety of dishes, shapes and forms while paying homage to the produce of the region. The citywide pie competition will also take place throughout July, perfect for the pastry lovers of the family.

5. Enter a fairytale
During the school holidays (July 10, 11, 12), the Creswick Theatre Company will be hosting the fairy godmother of all pantomimes – Cinderella. An interactive performance encouraging audience participation, this production is sure to have the whole family in stitches!

6. Explore your medieval fantasies
Make sure to check in to Kryal Castle on your way out of town and be enthralled by the spectacular (literally) Flaming Joust between Sir Hector and the Black Knight during a fiery clash in the Main Arena.
