horse shepherd equine sanctuary walking tours, gordon

This gorgeous farm sits on 200 hectares of land and is dedicated to rehabilitating all kinds of farm animals but particularly horses. Found neglected, discarded after racing or aged and unwell, Horse Shepherd takes them on, provides them vet care and allows them to happily live out their days with the rest of the menagerie at the farm.

They now run walking tours where a lovely guide will take you around the farm with a small group to meet, feed and pet the animals. But hearing the heart warming rescue stories behind each animal was the best part for Mamma. What heroes Jen, Anne and the crew are!

Meet the noisy little piglet who was found alive buried in a ‘discard pile’ during a factory inspection; or the two BFF horses who have one quarter of an eye between them; and who can forget the collection of rowdy goats saved from a hoarder property as kids!

Your guide will take you on a leisurely walk with plenty of opportunities to hand out some tasty treats of carrot, bread and lucerne to the animals. There are so many! And if you’re lucky, some of those gorgeous and helpful farm dogs will accompany you around the farm and happily accept any pats you have to offer!

The paths around the farm can be bumpy and muddy, but it’s possible for prams to make its way around. This is a working farm, so little ones need to be kept close and Mamma recommends packing some snacks and water. The walk is on flat terrain and is very leisurely, stopping at each pen to meet the animals. At the end of your tour, some tea and coffee and bikkies will be offered.

Walking tours must be booked in advance and are only held twice a week, so get in early! The farm will send a helpful email the day before your visit with more detail about the weather and suggestions on what to wear to the farm. We had the best time, this is a really lovely way to spend a couple of hours with the fam.
