step back in time: family fun on the victorian goldfields railway

Mamma says it’s time to go FULL STEAM ahead for adventure! The Victorian Goldfields Railway is such a great family outing, to experience the joy of riding in an old steam train and getting a glimpse into life in another time.

Hop on to the train at either Maldon or Castlemaine and coast along for about 45-50 minutes through lovely bushland and along trails.

Spot the sheep and cows, poke your head out the window and wave at all the onlookers! We started our journey in Maldon, and then stopped in Castlemaine Station before a quick 40 min turnaround (and a visit to the kiosk) and back to Maldon.

Or alternatively, start at Castlemaine and then spend a couple of hours exploring Maldon (a 12 minute walk from the station or there is a shuttle).

Oh and over the school holidays there is some sweet clown entertainment too and extra times added to the train timetable.

On our journey to Castlemaine we had the whole compartment to ourselves but as it was busier on our return we shared with another family - which was great fun too! Toot Toot!

Make memories on this amazing journey.

Mamma’s special mentions: While you are in Maldon - check out the lolly shop and Christmas shop! If you spend some time in Castlemaine - visit the botanical gardens too!
