papelon, footscray

Fairly new to the Footscray food precinct is a lovely homely Latin American eatery - Papelon. Think of a colourful, cosy, cheerful restaurant full of happy, relaxed diners tucking into large plates of wholesome South American foods.

Arepas and plantain reign supreme, so be sure to include these in your order! The arepas, naturally gluten free, are giant corn bread stuffed with slow cooked meats, sauce, cheese and salsa. They are basically a big yummy sandwich. There are also meals with rice which are easily shared if you want to try a few different items.

Mamma’s fave, though? The fried plantain. WOWSERS! Available as a starter with 3 different toppings, or giant meal for two as a main (patacon), they are a tasty, crunchy, thick, savoury stacks of textures and flavours - plantain, meat, cheese, salsa, repeat!

Mamma and crew also enjoyed other starters including the unforgettable tequenos (fried dough mozerella sticks), served with a syrupy dipping sauce.

And the drinks! I mean, it’s worth coming just for a beverage! The sugar cane juice with lemon is sweet, zingy and refreshing. The passionfruit drink was insanely delicious and the cocada was sweet, cold and creamy. Incredible. We love this new addition to Foots!
