maits rest rainforest walk, otways

When you head into the Great Otways National Park, you should expect breathtaking landscapes varying from ocean to rainforest. Maits Rest Rainforest Walk is a wonderful way to experience the magic of an ancient rainforest while stretching those legs, especially for families with little kids as the walk is only a 30 minute loop.

There are plenty of seats and benches along the way to rest and take in the environment, or keep a keen eye peeled to spot some cute critters, including the famous carnivorous Otway Black Snail and long-nosed potoroo.

Then, look up! Myrtle Beech trees - 100’s of years old - toward overhead while leafy green ferns shelter you in the understory. Feel the majesty and age of this ancient wonderland as it was created when the Otways bordered Antartica. It’s simply awe-inspiring.

A mix of boardwalks, gravel paths and some sloped sections make up the track - and this could get muddy in winter and after heavy rain so appropriate walking gear is still needed.

Mamma’s special mention: Wildlife Wonders is nearby and a great adventure for the animal-enthusiast, future conservationist or fact-lover in your family. And Beech Forest in the Otways is worth a visit just for the Californian Redwood Forest.
