RAAF museum, point cook

You might assume the RAAF Base at Point Cook is off limits, but its museum welcomes everyone.

Step inside the main building and follow Australia’s wartime story, from World War I to recent Middle-Eastern conflicts. Uniforms, flags, letters, equipment and photographs sit alongside immersive trench displays that hint at life on the front line. Original rations, shrapnel, medals, notebooks and hand-written notes add powerful context, keeping the past vividly real.

The effort to preserve this part of our history is very much appreciated.

Two huge hangars now house an impressive line-up of aircraft - expect to see fighter jets, helicopters, vintage prop planes and bombers. You’ll also get a chance to see ejector seats, survival kits and other gear designed for landings behind enemy lines.

The scale really puts things in perspective and helps us grown ups and the kids appreciate how lucky we are.

Keep an eye out for the knowledgeable volunteers; they’re always keen to share extra stories and insights.
