vision australia, seeing eye dogs, kensington
/We recently had the very special opportunity to visit Vision Australia’s Seeing Eye Dogs campus in Kensington and honestly... it could be our favourite Mamma adventure yet! Thanks to a special invitation from the team, we got a rare behind-the-scenes look at the incredible work happening here.
Not only did we get to meet some ridiculously adorable doggos and puppies, but we also got a firsthand look at the remarkable journey they take before becoming life-changing companions for Australians who are blind or have low vision.
The purpose-built campus is amazing. Complete with train carriages, traffic lights, lifts, escalators and obstacles it is designed to help future Seeing Eye Dogs learn how to confidently and safely navigate the real world.
But what left the biggest impression on us wasn't the facility or even the puppies. It was the people.
From the dedicated trainers to the staff caring for the dogs every day, the passion, patience and commitment! Every dog is supported, encouraged and given the best possible chance to succeed in a role that will ultimately change someone's life.
Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs is looking for volunteer training dog carers to open their home to a Seeing Eye Dog undergoing formal training
Volunteer training dog carers will need to provide a warm, loving home for the dogs, offering them essential downtime before they are matched with someone who is blind or has low vision.
All food, vet and medical costs are covered by Seeing Eye Dogs, the main requirement is that volunteers need to drop the dogs off at the Seeing Eye Dogs centre in Kensington and pick them up on weekdays.
So, if you live near Kensington, work near Kensington or if Kensington is on the way to your workplace, we encourage you to apply.
Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs is also looking for compassionate volunteers to care for Seeing Eye Dogs that are a part of our breeding program.
Breeding dog carers will need to provide a loving home and care for the Seeing Eye Dog for the duration of its journey. Breeding dog carers must be available to drop off the Seeing Eye Dog at Seeing Eye Dogs headquarters in Kensington for veterinary appointments during weekdays, when required.
Feel good knowing you are helping to bring the next generation of Seeing Eye Dogs into this world, while looking after a mature and well-trained dog.
If you've ever dreamed of having a dog but weren't quite ready for the long-term commitment, or simply want to make a genuine difference, this could be one of the most rewarding opportunities around.
Big thanks to the team for our special visit - we loved it. And yes... the puppies!
