vietnamese museum australia, sunshine

The first of its kind, the new Vietnamese Museum Australia in Sunshine celebrates the rich heritage, traditions, and cultural contributions of the Vietnamese community in Australia.

Through video, pictorial, artefact and interactive displays see, hear and read the stories from the refugees who fled Vietnam and made it safely to Australia with government support from 1976 onwards.

This is a space built to preserve and honour the tapestry of Vietnamese life, so familiar to many of us living in Melbourne.

Timelines across the museum highlight significant cultural influences in South Vietnam over time, and follow the Vietnamese refugee journey from Indochina across to Australia from the 1970’s onwards, as well as the political landscape in Australia at the time that welcomed the people of Vietnam to safety and opportunity.

The museum celebrates culture passed down and transformed from generation to generation since the arrival of the first ‘boat people’ to these shores. And it also recognises the unfolding and as-yet unknown contributions Vietnamese people will continue to make to shape the future of Australia.

A beautiful garden courtyard runs the length at the front of the building, and level 2 boasts a large function centre and commercial kitchen available for hire.
