the top adventures in the macedon ranges by mamma knows west
/ Mandy Couzens
The Macedon Ranges is one of the most beautiful destinations in Victoria. THOUSANDS of people flock to this area in the Autumn to see the incredible colours of the season, The Avenue of Honour (above) is a particular fave - albeit VERY busy, and the Macedon Autumn Festival which runs until end of April is a MUST DO- but Mamma says this area is stunning ALL year round. Here are some of our favourite places to visit.
Located in Kyneton’s Botanic Gardens, Kyneton's Community Park in Melbourne's West is just the best spot for a picnic, a gathering or a casual family hang!
Woodend’s Children’s Park is such a gorgeous playground! Firstly, it’s HUGE, and has so many zones, so kids of all ages will love it here.
In the beautiful town of Gisborne, this Adventure Playground can be found. There is a large diversity of play equipment in the main area, and an enclosed playground for the little ones as well! Expect lots of swings, slides, flying foxes, ramps and tunnels, walkie-talkies and PLENTY of space to run! There are picnic tables, lots of paths for bikes and scooters, and a fenced area for toddlers too!
Mamma can’t think of a better reason to take a road trip than to go to Hanging Rock Winery in Melbourne's West The grounds are beautiful, so have a wander, take in the vines and views, say hello to the cows, spot the wedge-tailed eagles and of course get ready for a fantastic drop of wine! If you need another excuse to visit here - the wine tasting is free and fantastic!
This has to be our favourite garden to visit - we have been so many times and seen it in all the seasons. It’s magical at any time of year.
You WILL need good, solid, comfortable footwear that grips, you WILL need to bring some water bottles, you WILL DEFINITELY need your camera
The Mount Macedon Hotel is one of those pubs that ticks ALL the boxes and more! Situated on the picturesque Mount Macedon, this hotel has just the best vibe. The warm fire, the fantastic musician strumming next to the table, and one (or, maybe two) tasty red wines. The food was great, the kids were happy and Mamma is looking forward to many more visits. There’s a huge beer garden too to spend a long weekend lunch.
Discover the hidden gem of Malmsbury's botanical gardens - a surprise package waiting to be explored! Mamma's favourite spot boasts a stunning lake at its heart, complete with an island accessible via a charming bridge.
This is the perfect little waterfall to visit with the little ones! Stanley Park Waterfall is located in lovely bushland just off the main road up Mount Macedon. Once you park in the car park it’s just a short stroll to the top of the waterfall where you can stand on the small viewing platform to see the water flowing off the top from the creek. There is a playground here and some BBQ’s too!
What a beauty! This amazing lake is not only peaceful and picturesque, but an adventure for all seasons.

Woodend is lovely and if you need a reason to visit - you’ve got one! We are already planning to come back to Kuzu Izakaya.
What a great spot! Three Little Pigs in Gisborne really ticks all the boxes! Great coffee, delicious food, bright and spacious and of course, a kids play area!
Mount Macedon Winery is a stunning place and often used for weddings - and Mamma can see why. The long winding driveway leads to a lovely restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating options, and the cellar door of course. The food is IMPECCABLE and the wine tasting paddle is always a great idea! Take a wander around the grounds afterwards and say hi to the cows and sheep - you may even spot a Llama!
What an awesome spot! Woodend is such a cool little town in its own right and it’s also the perfect pit-stop on the way to and from lots of other great places and we love the great little play area for the kids.
Mamma says that if you can drive past Bourkies without stopping for a bite then you must be crazy! This iconic bakery has been serving up the best meat pies, sausage rolls, vanilla slices and more for 30 years!
